FAQs

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are very thin - much finer than injection needles, so most people feel little to no pain.

You may notice mild sensations such as pressure, warmth, heaviness, or a dull ache. These are normal, usually brief, and even a positive sign that your body is responding and your nervous system is engaging. If anything ever feels uncomfortable, adjustments can be made; you’re in control the entire time.

Many patients find treatments deeply relaxing and may even fall asleep. Sensitivity can vary from person to person and depending on the area of the body being treated.

How do herbal remedies work in a clinical setting?

After a thorough intake, we create an individualized herbal plan based on your health history, goals, and what feels realistic for you. I prescribe western herbal medicine only, as I am a western herbalist.

Herbal formulas are prepared by a professional compounding herbal dispensary in Victoria, BC. Depending on where you live, we can arrange pickup directly from the dispensary, or I can coordinate pickup and delivery to you. In some cases, I can also suggest high-quality options available at local supplement stores. We’ll work together to choose an approach that feels accessible and aligned for you. Formulas are adjusted over time based on how your body responds.

Do you offer direct billing or accept insurance?

Yes. I can direct bill to most extended health insurance providers.

I am also ICBC-approved and able to direct bill for ICBC claims in British Columbia. If you have an open ICBC claim number, you are automatically allotted 12 acupuncture treatments that are covered. If you’re unsure about your coverage, feel free to get in touch, and I’m happy to help you navigate it.

What can I expect at my first acupuncture appointment?

Your initial appointment is 75 minutes.

We begin with a comprehensive intake, where I ask detailed questions about your current concerns, health history, lifestyle, and goals, and include a tongue and pulse assessment to gain a deeper picture of your overall health.

Treatment may include a combination of acupuncture, cupping, gua sha, hands-on techniques, or electrical stimulation (e-stim), depending on what your body needs. You can expect to rest with the needles for at least 15 minutes.

Treatments may be face up, face down, or a combination of both. At the end of the session, I’ll offer recommendations for ongoing care. These plans evolve based on how you feel and respond.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments varies depending on the condition, how long it’s been present, and your individual goals. Acute concerns often respond more quickly, while chronic or complex patterns may require a longer-term approach.

We reassess regularly and adjust treatment frequency as your body changes. You are never locked into a treatment plan.

What should I wear or bring to my appointment?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to areas like your arms, legs, neck, or back. It’s best to have a light meal before your appointment, as acupuncture isn’t recommended on an empty stomach.

If you plan to use insurance, please bring your insurance information.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes. Acupuncture is a regulated healthcare profession. All needles used are sterile, single-use, and disposed of safely. Treatments are tailored to your individual health history, comfort level, and current state of health.

How soon will I notice results?

Some people notice changes after the first session, while others experience more gradual shifts over a few treatments. Nervous system–based work can be subtle at first, especially if your system has been under stress for a long time.

Healing is not always linear, and responses vary. We track changes together and adjust treatment accordingly.
